Three Interesting Things I’ve learned about the Ketogenic Diet

I’ve been recently reading some interesting information about the ketogenic diet and its benefits on weight loss and fighting cancer. For those of you not familiar with the ketogenic diet, it is a diet that consists of 75 percent fat, 20 percent protein, and a tiny portion of carbs. It works toward a state of ketosis in the body thanks to the balancing of macronutrients. I’ve been learning an abundant amount of information about this diet, but here are just three facts about it that stood out to me.

There are many types of ketogenic diet. According to the article, “Top Cancer Researcher Recommends the Ketogenic Diet” found on www.healthiguide.com, some of the various types of keto diets include the standard diet, cyclical keto diet, targeted keto diet and high-protein keto diet.

The standard keto diet is the one I mentioned earlier, which is a high-fat, moderate-protein and low-carb.

Some of the foods within the ketogenic diet.

The high protein diet is similar to the standard, but with high 35 percent protein.

The targeted diet is said to be popular with bodybuilders and includes carbs around workouts.

The last one, cyclical diet, is a little more complex. It involves a mix of higher-carb re-feeds with a cycle of five ketogenic days supplemented by a couple of high-carb days.

It was originally developed as a natural treatment for neurological diseases including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. While it is said to be effective in weight loss and slowing down cancer, the keto diet has also been beneficial in treating neurological diseases, such as epilepsy, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. This is due to the fact that what you eat can influence the health of your nerves. According to the above-mentioned article, the keto diet was found good in reducing seizures, halting the progression of the Alzheimer’s disease and because of its ability to cut insulin levels, help in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. There is even a consensus that this diet delivers immense health benefits at the metabolic, neurological, or insulin-related fronts.

It’s not for everyone, so talk to your doctor before trying it. Some people who have tried the keto diet have become sick from it. In fact, the beginning stages will likely shows signs of discomfort. That is why it is important for you to talk to your doctor before deciding to go on this diet. I hope to do the same before I ever consider engaging in this or any other diet.

Following the keto diet is far from easy. While it has its benefits, it does have its challenges as well.
