We have been hearing quite a bit about possible booster shots for COVID-19. These shots are recommended for people who have received the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines at least 6 months ago. They are a part of this country’s ongoing fight against this disease. However, what are the other requirements for getting a booster shot? Who is eligible for them? What other information does research tell us about booster shots? Here are a few things about booster shots you need to know.
Why are Booster Shots Needed?
While most people who are vaccinated are protected against the virus, some vaccines could lose their power over time. Early research shows that vaccines that use mRNA like Pfizer and Moderna could eventually lose some of their power against infection and illness. This is where booster shots come in to restore the vaccine’s effectiveness. If you’re eligible, the CDC and FDA recommend you get one. However, who qualifies for booster shots right now? Let’s find out who does.
Who Qualifies for Booster Shots?
Right now, certain demographics qualify for the booster shots. Those who have received the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months ago can get a booster shot if they are:
- 65 or older.
- 18 or older living in a long-term care setting.
- 18 or older with a pre-existing condition.
- 18 or older and you live or work in a high-risk location such as a hospital, school, etc.
If you meet these qualifications, you could schedule an appointment now. However, the requirements for those who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine are a little different. If you received the vaccine 2 or more months ago and are 18 or older, you may qualify for its booster.
Can you Mix and Match Booster Shots?
Some people who have received one of the vaccines have wondered if they could receive a booster that doesn’t match. For example, if you received the Moderna vaccine, could you get the Pfizer booster shot? That’s a good question and the answer to that is yes.
According to the CDC, you can decide if you want to take a booster that either matches your initial vaccine or go with a different booster from the first one. Some research even shows that mixing two different vaccines could give as much protection against COVID-19.
Getting a booster shot will not only restore your vaccine’s effectiveness, but will further protect you against COVID-19. If you qualify for it, be sure to get your booster shot today.
