What you should know about at-Home Colon Cleanses

I was looking at some YouTube videos recently and I didn’t realize that there is quite a bit of videos about at-home colon cleanses.  I’ve recently tried one that a friend shared with me that contained a cup of warm water, two teaspoons of Himalayan salt, and two tablespoons of fresh lemon juice.  While that mixture certainly cleansed me, colon cleanses have been proven to be helpful and in some ways harmful to people.  How often should you do them?  When should you not do them?  Here are a few things you must know about at-home colon cleanses.

When is Colon Cleanses good for you?

Normally used for the preparation of a colonoscopy procedure or detoxification, colon cleanses are said to be beneficial in removing toxins from your digestive system.  These toxins, found in your gastrointestinal tract, can cause various health problems such as high blood pressure.  Medical experts believe that colon cleanses not only remove these toxins but boost energy and enhance the immune system.  However, there isn’t much evidence to support these claims.

Exercise is still vital when maintaining a healthy colon

When it could be Harmful

However, there are some harmful consequences to colon cleanses.  Most of the time, they aren’t needed because your body already has built-in mechanisms that eliminate harmful substances.  Your liver and kidneys are two examples of those mechanisms.

Colon cleansing has also caused mild side effects such as bloating, diarrhea, cramping, and vomiting.  There’s even one called a coffee enema, sometimes used in colon cleanses, that has been linked to several deaths.  Other potential issues linked to colon cleansing include:

  • Dehydration
  • Infection
  • Tear in the rectum

How often should you do a Colon Cleanse?

One article I skimmed to acknowledge this question as being misleading.  The best time to get one is if your colon isn’t cleansing itself at least once a day.  You will need to get one as soon as possible, along with making some lifestyle changes such as eating right and exercise.

But experts say that it’s not a good idea to do one often because it will lead to numerous health problems.  Ultimately, before you decide to do one, you must exercise some precautions.

Check with your doctor first before getting a colon cleanse, especially if you have serious health problems. Get a list of specific ingredients and amounts in any products you use.  Some of these ingredients could cause health problems.  Colon cleanses could be beneficial in some cases, but also harmful when done too often.

If you have any questions or comments about colon cleanses, feel free to leave them in the box below.  If there is anything else about this topic that you wished I mentioned, please share that as well.  As always, please like or share this post with someone you care about.
