What you must include in your diet for Healthier Nails

I’m sure like most women you have admired the beauty and the length of another woman’s nails.  Have you ever wondered how their nails grew so fast?  A big part of the fingernails appearance is genetics, but it could also be what you put in your body.  Dermatologist Dendy Engelman, M.D., an assistant professor of dermatology at New York Medical College, says that doctors often use nails as an indicator of the person’s overall health. With a person’s fingernails being one of the most important parts of the body, what are the best foods for healthier nails? Here are just four nail-friendly nutritious foods.

This one is a common staple in a person’s fridge.  It’s none other than eggs. According to the article, “7 Foods That’ll Help You Get Gorgeous Nails”, on the Women’s Health magazine website, eggs protein advantages are key to promoting nail growth.  In fact, the nail plate, which is the hard see-through portion of the nail, is made of protein?  Eggs are also rich in Vitamin B, components of biotin. This has been shown to help boost nail growth.

The next food that is beneficial to your nails is broccoli. This green veggie helps in putting the protein you eat to use because it contains an amino acid called cysteine.  Cysteine is a semi-essential proteinogenic amino acid. Broccoli’s nutritional value helps in keeping your nails strong and healthy.

The type of foods you eat could affect the health of your nails.

Another good food to add to your diet is salmon.  There is no doubt that this healthy pink fish is delicious, but it also contains lots of protein and zinc. This helps your body absorb the protein you consume.  A few other nutrients salmon has are selenium and copper. These nutrients aid in the production of the collagen that can boost nail growth.

This last food is a healthy fat.  I have written about it a couple of times before and use it on my skin.  It is none other than coconut oil.  This oil enhances your body’s ability to absorb nutrients.  It also contains vitamins A, D, E, and K, all of which contribute to nail strength.

These are just some of the foods that help contribute to strong, healthy nails.  If you want to learn more about other foods that could strengthen the health of your nails, visit www.womenshealthmag.com.
