What do Four Different Sleep Positions Indicate about your Health?

We all have different ways we normally sleep. Some of us sleep on our backs, on our sides, on our stomachs, or in a soldier position. No matter how you sleep, it could indicate a few things about your health or even your personality. Let’s touch on four common sleep positions and their indications about you.

Do you know your sleep position says a lot about your health?

Back Sleeping

Out of all the sleep positions, back sleeping does come with some benefits. Pediatricians do recommend putting infants to sleep on their backs to lower their risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). It benefits sleepers in other age groups, too.

However, it could come with some health risks. People with the medical condition obstructive sleep apnea tend to have breathing problems when sleeping on their backs. This is because the airway is more easily blocked when sleeping on their backs. Some people with back pain have even had trouble sleeping in this position.

Fetal Position

This sleep position is especially common amongst us women. The fetal is known as the curled-up side sleeping position. Research has shown that people who sleep this way are normally warm and friendly, but have a protective shell around them.

To make this position comfortable for you, try keeping your limbs and chin loose and posture relaxed. Avoid numbness by not sleeping with one hand under the pillow. Unfortunately, I usually have a habit of sleeping this way.

Stomach Sleeping

While back sleeping is harmful to people with sleep apnea, stomach sleeping is the opposite. Sleeping on your belly is more beneficial for sleep apnea sufferers. However, it does come with its health issues. People who sleep on their stomachs put stress on their necks and lower backs. This could lead to a serious muscle back strain.

Starfish Sleeping

Not too many people sleep this way. Less than 10% of people sleep in this position. The starfish position is another form of back sleeping but with your arms up and legs slightly apart. Some studies say people who sleep this way are more likely to be good listeners and don’t crave attention.

These four common sleeping positions indicate a lot about your health and personality. No matter what sleeping position you prefer, may it be a comfortable one for you. Have yourself a good night’s sleep!

How do you usually like to sleep? On your back, on your side, or in a curled-up fetal position? Feel free to share in the comments below. As usual, be sure to like or share this post with the next sleeping beauty you know.
