Quarantining and its Impact on Mental Health Patients

Quarantining for some people has become mentally draining, but for those dealing with mental illnesses, it has become especially difficult.  Last week, I read a disturbing article about a man, who suffered from bipolar disorder, take his own life because of not being able to deal with self-isolation.  This news helped bring awareness to mental health people dealing with being quarantined.  What could we do to make sure we are being there for them?  There are various resources we can utilize in helping a mentally ill person during these hard times.

Quarantining is having an impact on those dealing with a mental illness.

Psychological impact of those in quarantine

There have been many, besides this man, who has felt the psychological effects of being in quarantine.  Some of these effects include post-traumatic stress symptoms, confusion, and anger.  Most reviewed studies have shown these to be common negative effects quarantining could cause.  These effects have proven to be detrimental for a person already battling a mental illness.

Steps that are needed to take

Being in quarantine for such a long period could lead to a lot of stress for those dealing with mental illness.  But if you’re a person going through this, you are not alone.  Stay in contact with your healthcare provider if stress gets in the way of your daily activities.  Be sure to continue with your usual treatment and be aware of worsening symptoms.  One study suggested that having a telephone support line, staffed by psychiatric nurses, set up for those in quarantine could be effective.

Stay in contact with your friends and family via various social networks like Instagram and messaging platforms like WhatsApp.  This will provide a sense of relief for them in letting them know you’re okay.

There is a lot of resources online providing support for mental health patients dealing with being quarantined or Covid-19.  The Kennedy Forum Illinois, an organization devoted to ending stigma against people with mental health problems, recently has been holding a free webinar for businesses and individuals dealing with stress and mental health issues during Covid-19.  National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) offers a free and confidential helpline for those who need one-on-one assistance.

One Response to Quarantining and its Impact on Mental Health Patients

  1. Thank you, Brandi. I will be sure to check out the webinar. I’m planning to launch a free class series to our church to help with practical steps to stop the spiral into depression or overwhelming anxiety. The isolation, etc is a concern for all of us emotionally.
This, as you have stated, is most concerning for those who were ill equipped going into this lockdown. I pray those folks find the proper resources to find healing. I am glad I’m in this space for those ready to fight and win!
