How to Fix these Four Common Problems with Face Masks

Let’s face it- as long as this virus continues to spread, we will still have to wear face masks.  No matter where you go, it is considered a requirement to wear.  However, there have been some downsides to wearing a mask.  Some people have developed skin problems, earlobe pain, overheating, and stuffiness.  If you’ve experienced these problems while wearing a mask, here are a few tips you can deal with them.

Skin Problems

One of the most common problems with face masks is that it could be hard on your skin.  Some people have developed a name for this condition.  It is called “maskne.”  This newly coined name happens when you start to develop acne due to fabric friction from your mask.  The medical term for it is acne mechanica.  Fabric from masks can repeatedly rub against the skin, causing the inflammation of your hair follicles.

The main solution to this problem is to wash or change your mask after using it.  Avoid harsh soaps or drying agents when washing your face.  Clean and moisturize your face daily.  If you have any allergies, choose face masks that contain mild materials.

Earlobe Pain

A lot of healthcare workers have developed this next condition when using a mask.  It is earlobe pain.  The majority of face masks have rubber band-looking loops that you could put behind the ears to hold it in place.  These ear loops could become irritating and painful to the back of the ears.  However, there are ways you can alleviate this problem.

If you have long hair, try wearing a hairpin or headband to attach the loops instead of putting them behind the ears.  Some facemasks have loops that could be wrapped around the head and connected to the elastic.

Stuffiness

In addition to these problems, some people just develop a hint of stuffiness while wearing a mask.  This doesn’t necessarily mean that their nose is stuffy.  This just means that they feel uncomfortable wearing a mask.  They may find wearing one to be very suffocating.

The easy way to solve this problem is to find a mask made with lighter fabrics and fewer layers.  Smaller masks create a less heavy feeling than a big mask.  Ultimately, you must find one that makes it easier for you to breathe.

Overheating

Many people have found their bodies overheating while wearing a mask.  This is due to wearing it while working outdoors in the summer heat.  People tend to overexert themselves in the heat while wearing a mask.  So what must you do to avoid having this happen to you?

The important thing you must do is to be careful in working outdoors while wearing a mask.  Don’t overexert yourself to the point you start having shortness of breath.  If you start feeling this way, it may be best to find a cool spot, remove your mask, and hydrate yourself.  Just be sure you’re at a six feet distance from any people while doing this.

Because of this situation, we’re likely going to be wearing a mask for a while.  But if you start to develop any of these problems, follow these tips in having an easier time wearing one.
