Five Foods, other than Carrots, that are Good for the Eyes

What you eat has a great impact than you think on the health of your eyes.  This is why I compiled a list of five eye-friendly foods we must be eating today.  I know what you’re thinking- carrots have to be on top of the list, right? Yes, carrots do contain beta-carotene, which makes it a very vision-boosting food.  But on this list, I’m going to examine other foods besides the rabbit-loving vegetable.  Here are the five best foods for your eye health.

Leafy green veggies help in maintaining the health of your eyes.

The first one is nuts and seeds.  Foods like walnuts, cashews and chia seeds are rich in vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids.  They protect the eyes from age-related damage.  So put them in your yogurt, cereals or eat them on your own.  You will be doing more benefit to your eyes including nuts and seeds in your diet.

The second food to include in your diet is beef.  This meat contains higher levels of zinc than chicken breast and pork loin.  Zinc can help delay age-related sight loss and macular degeneration.  Eating casserole or stew dishes that contain beef in them could give your eyes the right amount of nutrition they need.

Another eye-friendly food is leafy green vegetables.  We can’t say enough about veggies, except that they are rich in both lutein and zeaxanthin.  This makes them beneficial to your eye’s health, maintaining the Vitamin C your vision truly need. One of those greens that do this is kale.  So do what your mother has been telling you and eat your vegetables.  They also help lower your risk of eye diseases such as cataracts.

I’ve talked about EVOO before and now it’s not only good in lowering your cholesterol.  It’s also beneficial in maintaining the health of your eyes.  Some its eye-friendly ingredients include polyphenols and vitamin E.  In a 2001 study, researchers found that eating more vitamin E foods can help slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by about 25 percent.  So be sure to drizzle some olive oil on your salad or sandwich anytime.

The last food to discuss is a popular fruit and it just so happens to be berries.  One particular berry that has modest amounts of sugar and high on antioxidant level is the blueberry.  Its 15 grams of natural sugar per 1 cup serving makes it a healthy food in safeguarding the health of your eyes.  Because they are available year round, you could purchase them anytime.

These are just some of the foods that are beneficial to your eye’s health.  There are plenty others, but including these in your diet should get you off to better vision health.  For more information on eating the right foods in boosting your vision’s health, check out the article, “5 Vision-Boosting Foods that aren’t Carrots,” on www.americasbest.com.  Also, be sure to share your thoughts and comments at the bottom of this article.
