Experiencing Dry Eyes in the Winter Season?- Here’s how to Treat it

During this season, many people start to experience a case of dry eyes. This condition is likely to occur in the winter and spring seasons. Lower indoor humidity and high winds can cause dry eyes and discomfort to occur. If you’ve been experiencing this, there are ways to treat or prevent it. Let’s learn how we can in this week’s post.

Dry eyes are most likely to occur in the winter season.

Indoor Humidifiers

One good way to treat dry eyes is to invest in an indoor humidifier. Because wintry dry eyes are caused by indoor heaters, these humidifiers help restore moisture in the air. For them to be effective, you must keep them clean regularly. If you fail to do this, the moisture in your humidifier could start to attract mold and bacteria, making it a breeding ground for illness.

Artificial Tears

One common way to treat dry eyes in the winter season is to use some over-the-counter artificial tears. If you wear contact lenses, consider purchasing a contacts-friendly option. When using eye drops, be sure to read the label carefully. Don’t apply the drops frequently if they contain preservatives.

Ideally, you should be applying the artificial tear drops up to six times, but consult a doctor if you find yourself applying them more than that. A doctor will be able to tell you about prescription treatments for dry eyes.

Eye Ointments

Another form of treating dry eyes is applying another over-the-counter product called eye ointments. These products are typically thicker than artificial tears. You will usually apply them to your inner lower lash line before bedtime. Most eye ointments could be purchased at drugstores.

Preventing Dry Eyes

Now that you know how to treat dry eyes, what are some ways you can prevent it? Here is a list of a few ways you can do this:

  • Keep your home as cool as you can to reduce your heater usage.
  • Avoid the use of hair dryers.
  • Try to avoid taking antihistamines when you have a cold.
  • Consider adding omega-3 fatty acids to your diet.

Dry eyes is a common problem for many people during this winter season. But if you consider these suggestions, you can be on your way to treating this condition.
