Could certain oils be bad for your health?

There are an abundant amount of oils in this world.  There is coconut oil, grape seed oil, olive oil, you name it.  We primarily use them to cook our foods with.  While some of them do have their health benefits, there are certain vegetable and seed oils that could cause health problems.  What are these oils?  Why should you be conscious about how much you are consuming?  Here are three reasons that answer this question.

Consuming excessive amounts of vegetable oils could lead to health risks.
  • Vegetable oils high in omega-6:  While not all plant oils are exactly bad for your health, you may want to avoid the ones that are high in omega-6 contents.  Scientists have said that too much omega-6 relative to omega-3 may contribute to chronic inflammation.  Observational studies have associated high intakes of omega-6 fat to an increased risk of obesity and heart disease.  However, these associations don’t necessarily imply a causal relationship.  Some of these types of oils include soybean oil, canola oil and peanut oil, just to name a few.
  • Lack of nutrients:  Because vegetable oil is highly processed, it lacks nutrients.  They are also sometimes high in trans fats.  Hydrogenated vegetable oils, which are found in margarine and ice cream, are high in trans fat.  Consuming too much trans fats could possibly lead to all sorts of chronic diseases such as cancer and diabetes.
  • These types of oils are easily oxidized:  You might want to consume oils high in polyunsaturated fats in moderation, too. They are susceptible to oxidation.  Putting very high levels of these fatty acids into your system can easily be degraded to form harmful compounds.  Try balancing your diet with a mix of healthy polyunsaturated, monounsaturated and saturated fats.

So consuming excessive amounts of vegetable oils with high levels of omega-6, trans fat and are easily oxidized could lead to some serious health problems.  With everything that you eat, please make sure you are doing so in moderation.  But what about consuming excessive amounts of olive oil and its effect on your health?  I’ll discuss that on my next post.  For more information on different oils and their health dangers you must know about, check out the article, “Are Vegetable and Seed Oils Bad for Your Health?” on www.healthline.com.

    • Thanks for responding, Jennifer. I’m happy you enjoyed the blog post. A friend of mine inspired the idea to talk about this. So I’m trying to put together my email list for my blog this year. So if you want to join my list, feel free to let me know. Also, if you know of anyone in need of a freelance health writer to do any projects, please let me know on that as well.
