5 Ways You Can Treat Heat Stroke at Home

When you’re playing fun games with your family and friends in the summer heat, be sure you or they don’t develop this dangerous form of heat exhaustion called heat stroke. This condition normally occurs from prolonged exposure to the extremely hot sun. Your core body temperature normally is greater than 104 degrees when experiencing this condition. Some of the symptoms include confusion, nausea, seizures, and disorientation. However, there are several ways you can experience recovery from heatstroke. One of these ways is even a natural remedy. Let’s look at 5 ways you can treat this dangerous condition at home or wherever you’re at this summer.

Immerse Yourself in Cold Water

When developing a severe heat stroke, there’s nothing like being exposed to some ice-cold water. This helps cool your body temperature quickly back to normal so that your brain and vital organs are affected. Run a bath or shower of cold water. If the patient is healthy enough and they just developed a heat stroke while exercising, you may use an ice bath to cool their body off. However, don’t consider using an ice bath on elderly people, young children, or patients with a chronic illness suffering from heat stroke.

Go to a Shady or Air-Conditioned Place

In addition to immersing your body in some cold water, going to an air-conditioned area is beneficial. Your body is overheated and needs to be exposed to cool air. If you or someone you know starts experiencing severe heat exhaustion, go to a shady area with either an air-conditioner or a fan. Adequate air is vital in helping a person to cool off during those seriously hot summer days. If you can’t afford an air-conditioner unit, please buy a fan for your room.

Drink plenty of Water

This can’t be expressed enough, especially on 90-degree days where heat stroke is at a higher risk. Staying hydrated is essential to not get sick and end up in a hospital. It is highly recommended to drink at least eight glasses of water per day. Don’t drink sugary or alcoholic beverages to rehydrate because these drinks could interfere with your body’s temperature. Because you lose salt through sweating, it might be best to use an electrolyte-rich sports drink to replenish salt and water. However, check with your doctor concerning this.

Applying Onion Juice on your Skin

This treatment is known as one of the best Ayurvedic, which is a holistic treatment developed more than 3,000 years ago in India, for heatstroke. Applying onion juice to your skin can help bring your body temperature down. Ayurvedic practitioners recommend that you apply this liquid behind your ears and on your chest. There’s even more research that shows that the juice of red onions can be effective in treating heat strokes and sunburns.

Eating Foods that are Hydrating

There are several foods you can eat that contain water in them that could prevent a heat stroke. Foods that are high in water content such as fruits and veggies can help replenish lost nutrients and fluids. Plums are a good example because they are hydrating and a great source of antioxidants. Drinking plenty of water along with having a balanced diet could help in regulating your body’s temperature and prevent you from getting sick. Some experts even say that eating some salty foods such as salted crackers and pretzels could prevent heat stroke.

With the summer season in full swing, we must take care of ourselves by not overworking ourselves in the burning heat. Stay hydrated, wear lightly-colored clothing, and eat some refreshing, hydrating foods are the way to beat the heat. Look after our elderly loved ones and young children as well. Have a great summer this year and stay healthy.
