For now, the beginning of the school year has gone remote for many Chicago area kids. However, most young people will eventually have to transition into going into their physical schools. I may not be a parent, but I do empathize with parents and the challenges they are going through with their children this year. I especially care about mothers. So as we all strive to work and go to school around this pandemic, let’s examine four ways they can help their children stay safe.
Teach them the Importance of Good Hygiene
It’s paramount more than ever that parents teach their children the importance of good hygiene. Germs can spread so easily amongst children. That’s why it’s important parents teach handwashing to them. Practice washing your hands for 20 seconds with your child. Instruct them on the importance of continuing to do this at school. Request a copy of your child’s school safety plan, if they have one in place.
Encourage Social Distancing
You may understand the importance of social distancing, but your children may not. Be sure to explain to them what this is and why it’s important. Help them to understand that they could still socialize with their friends, but at a distance. Admonish them to continue practicing this when interacting with their teachers, too.
Stress the Importance of Masking Up
Your children will likely complain about this, but wearing a mask is mandatory for everybody these days including them. Try to find a breathable, comfortable mask your child could wear. Sometimes, if you have young children, having them wear a face shield could be a good option. Opt for a fun-looking mask that will appeal to your child. Encourage them to wear their mask when they’re around people.
Have your child go to the Doctor when Sick
It’s more important than ever for parents to have their child stay home if he or she gets sick. Because of this, you must send your child to the doctor ASAP when this happens. Now isn’t the time to procrastinate. If your child starts to develop any cold-related symptoms such as a sore throat or runny nose, take them to the doctor and have them stay at home. You don’t want them to potentially put other people at risk of getting sick.
Preparing your children for this school year is going to be more stressful than ever. But as their parent, you must teach them to remain safe during this pandemic. It’s all part of slowing the spread of this disease.
